Frontier Movement, Health and Healing in Action

Stephanie Swann, BS, LMT, CPT, CNT

• Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science from the University of South Carolina School of Public Health, May 1997
• Nationally Certified and Licensed Massage Therapist from Southeastern School of Neuromuscular and Massage Therapy, May 1998
• AFAA Certified Personal Trainer, April 2001
• Certified Natural Trainer from Monkey Bar Gym in Madison Wisconsin, April 2008

Shortly after opening her massage practice, Stephanie met Chris Hardwicke who owned the gym next door. They began trading bodywork for training sessions. Within two years, Stephanie had moved her practice into the gym and, at Chris's urging, obtained her personal training certification.

"I soon realized that Chris's experience as an Olympic level athlete, coach, and trainer was much more valuable than a weekend certification. Even a college education was no match for hands-on learning with a trainer with so much experience."

Growing up, Stephanie was always active but could never be considered fit. As a child she played soccer for six years. She danced in her middle school and high school's performing arts program as well as a civic jazz company in Columbia. She played high school varsity fast-pitch softball, church softball and basketball, and occasional golf and tennis.

"I was always a thin girl. The term "skinny fat" comes to mind. I was small but had no muscle tone. When I began lifting weights in my early twenties, I was so excited to be motivated to have the body I always wanted. I was finally willing to work for it. Twelve years later I actually weigh more than I ever have. BUT, I'm smaller than I ever was, with defined muscle, and in the best shape I've ever been in. I couldn't care less about what the scale says!"

Stephanie's strong background in anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, kinesiology, and motor development gave her a keen sense of how the body is supposed to move and how muscular imbalance and skeletal deviation can cause postural distortion. Those studies plus 14 years of practical experience in clinical therapeutic massage and 8 years of personal training have sharpened her understanding of the form and function of the human body.

Stephanie has performed over 1000 hours of Frontier Movement work directly with Chris Hardwicke and is involved in the research and development of the Frontier Movement project. Her combined practice of massage and training give Stephanie the unique ability to watch a client move, notice particular structural or muscular weaknesses, and then coach the client to move more efficiently.

Likewise, Stephanie can help an injured client get back to full function and balanced movement. It is not enough to focus on the aesthetics of building muscle. Being able to translate actions in the gym to useful activity in day-to-day life is the key to having a well-balanced and strong body.

"I'll tell you the truth. I'm human too, and sometimes I just don't feel like working out. But I know that my partners are counting on me to be there. I have come to love the AGONY and the ENERGY of group workouts! You will often find me collapsed on the floor, drenched in sweat at the end of a set...and loving the feeling!!
